Building Trust through Transparency – The Importance of Standards and Data Quality

For digital product passports to be effective, the data they contain must be accurate, consistent and accessible. Blippa’s platform emphasises transparency, accuracy, consistency, accessibility and interoperability, aligning with standards that ensure DPPs serve their purpose. Since 15 July 2026, six European standards for product passports (EN 18216, EN 18219–18223) are cited in the Official Journal of the EU.

Transparency

Passports must clearly outline the product’s origin, composition and sustainability attributes. Consumers and regulators need to understand where materials come from and how products are manufactured. By designing clear layouts and including comprehensive data, brands demonstrate openness and authenticity.

Accuracy

Information in the passport should be verifiable. Manufacturers must source data from reliable systems — such as ERP or PLM — and update passports when changes occur. Blippa’s integration capabilities make it easier to pull accurate data from existing sources.

Consistency

To enable easy comparisons across products and brands, passports should use consistent data fields and terminology. Blippa’s templates help standardise information, ensuring that all passports follow the same structure and include all required fields.

Accessibility

DPPs must be accessible to all stakeholders, regardless of their technical expertise. Blippa’s responsive design ensures that passports are easy to navigate on any device, and the use of QR codes makes access instant. A passport’s content should be understandable even to non‑experts.

Interoperability

Digital product passports should work across different systems and platforms. Blippa supports open standards and APIs so that data can flow between supply chain partners, retailers and regulatory bodies. Interoperability promotes efficiency and reduces redundancy.

Conclusion

Trust is the foundation of successful digital product passports. By adhering to principles of transparency, accuracy, consistency, accessibility and interoperability, brands can offer passports that build confidence among consumers, regulators and partners. Blippa’s platform incorporates these principles.
